What are emoticons?

Emoticons or "smileys" are little icons used in chat messages to indicate emotion. Since you can't hear someone's tone of voice in a text message, the meaning of some messages may not be clear. Emoticons help by giving a visual clue to go along with the words. For example, if you send a message that might otherwise sound mean but you include a smiling face at the end, it will most likely be interpreted as sarcasm because it tells the person you had a smile on your face when you sent it.

Each PULPchat can choose a set of "standard" emoticons or they can design their own set from scratch. In addition to facial expressions, emoticons can be used for symbols, indicators, or special notation.
